Still need more plastic for your whip? Grab some of these and get wild in the streets. We do have some other plastic kit like riser pads, we’ll look at options and what they do in another post soon. YO! George… what ever happened to Rat Nuts? bring em’ back, with all this plastic going around we’re going to need them. It kind of makes sense if you tend to wear out the tail of your deck quickly, after all a new tail will cost you $14.00 and a decent deck is over $100.00 right! Skid to your hearts content with the comfort of knowing you haven’t left half of that amazing reissue deck you’ve wanted for years on the rough road behind you. In fact these pieces of plastic are why some nice examples of survivor 1970’s & 80’s completes are still with us and in extraordinary condition today. They have an uneven shape and are suitable for any concave surface. Because of this, they can adhere to the board more effectively and absorb rattle sounds, unlike cheaper rails. But really what this piece of plastic will do is stop you wearing out your deck. The rails for the skateboard can be purchased singly and are already taped on both sides using double-sided rubber tape. It will certainly change the feel of your board there. Some might tell you that the purpose is to completely ruin the experience of smacking your tail down to ollie, and it can be looked at as a kind of ollie muffler. The plastic tail guard is a much less popular piece of plastic than rails and it does serve a purpose. Hard or soft, slim or tall, round or square you’ll have a whole bunch of fun figuring out what works best for what you are skating. The other thing they can help is grabbing your board when performing aerial maneuvers, they also encourage skateboard operators not to mall grab when carrying their stick. Depending on the type of plastic they made from they will all perform differently and rail aficionados will have a particular preference depending on what you are hitting – steel or concrete coping, rails, parking blocks or curbs. They can help you slide and are worth trying out. Well kids, apart from some old person clinging to dreams of their youth, they actually serve a couple of purposes. If you are a skateboarder of a certain age like myself, you may have rails on your board and no doubt sooner or later you will get asked by some one of not so many years “what are those plastic things screwed to the bottom of your board?”. They are not necessary for your skateboard, but they serve a function and work. So today we are going to look at a couple bits of plastic hardware that are still with us. And pretty soon all sorts of gimmicks and plastic stuff started hitting the market to help you do just that. It all kind of worked well, but tweaking your set up is as old as skateboarding itself. Once upon a time skateboards were fairly basic, you know just a deck, trucks, wheels bearings and maybe griptape.
